A practical guide for medical missions, patient travel, and recurring Houston Medical Center trips.
The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world. Patients, families, and medical teams arrive from across the country and around the world for cancer treatment at MD Anderson, cardiac care at Memorial Hermann, pediatric services at Texas Children’s, transplant medicine at Methodist, and dozens of other specialties most cities don’t have access to.
For pilots flying these missions, whether you’re transporting a patient, accompanying a family member, or running a corporate medical trip, the airport you choose shapes everything that happens on the ground. This guide is an honest look at the Houston-area options.
The Honest Answer
Hobby (KHOU) is the closest airport to the Texas Medical Center by raw distance. But Hobby is a commercial hub — landing fees, ramp fees, slot management, and premium-only FBOs make it an expensive and complex option for private aviation. It can be the right choice for a Gulfstream operator with the budget and the runway requirement. For most general aviation missions, it isn’t.
Ellington (KEFD) is a pure-GA airport with a comparable drive time to TMC. Ellington is operated by the Houston Airport System (the same authority that runs Hobby and Bush) and shares its airspace with military and NASA operations. Jet A pricing at Ellington’s Signature FBO runs at the higher end of the metro.
Pearland Regional (KLVJ) offers a similar drive distance to TMC without the commercial-airport fee structure of Hobby or the joint-use complexity of Ellington. We’re not the closest airport on the map — but for most general aviation medical missions, we’re often the most practical one.
There’s no “best airport for TMC.” There’s the best airport for your specific trip. The comparison below should help you decide.

Why KLVJ Works for TMC Trips
Pearland Regional sits 18 miles south of the Texas Medical Center, with a straight-line drive up the Beltway 8 / SH-288 corridor. For most missions on most days, you’re at the TMC garage in 25 to 30 minutes.
A Calmer Arrival When You Need It
Medical trips are stressful for the people in the back of the plane. A patient finishing a long flight to a difficult appointment doesn’t need a commercial-terminal arrival, a long taxi to a premium FBO, or a chaotic ground transition. Pearland is a quiet, low-volume general aviation airport. Aircraft arrives, taxis to ramp, vehicle is waiting at the door. The whole process takes minutes.
Transparent Costs for Recurring Treatment
Many patients fly into Houston for treatment courses that span weeks or months. A cancer patient at MD Anderson may make 20 or more trips over the course of treatment. A family member of an organ transplant patient may fly in and out for weeks of waiting and post-operative care. Hobby’s landing-and-ramp fee structure across that many trips becomes substantial. Pearland’s $0 / $0 structure doesn’t.
Discreet Arrivals
For high-profile patients — executives, public figures, dignitaries, or anyone who wants their treatment private — KLVJ offers a small-airport environment that’s genuinely discreet. Private vehicle access to the ramp. No commercial terminal walk. No public-facing presence. The arrival happens, the trip moves forward, and no one outside the immediate care team knows.
Concierge Coordination
Pearland’s FBO team coordinates ground transportation, hotel reservations (preferred-rate properties throughout the TMC corridor), catering, and recurring trip logistics. For a family running a long treatment course, having a single point of contact who already knows the trip and the preferences removes a real burden.
After-Hours and Emergency Arrivals
Treatment doesn’t always cooperate with airport hours. Emergency consultations, urgent medical transfers, late-night arrivals from distant cities — KLVJ’s self-serve fuel runs 24/7, and our team is reachable around the clock for emergency or weather-driven arrivals. Call (281) 482-7551 at any time.
Ground Transportation to TMC
The fastest flight is the slowest trip if the ground transportation fails. Our team coordinates several options:
Private Car & Ground Service Black car service, private SUV, and medical-grade transport (if needed) coordinated through approved providers. Drivers familiar with TMC routing, drop-off points, and parking logistics for major hospitals.
Rental Cars Enterprise and Go Rentals coordination — vehicles staged at the FBO or delivered to a hotel.
Rideshare Uber and Lyft service KLVJ; typical TMC-area pickup costs $35–$55 depending on time of day and demand.
Courtesy Vehicle Pearland’s courtesy vehicle is available for short trips with advance reservation. For multi-day TMC stays, a rental car or longer-term arrangement is usually a better fit.
Coordination for Medical Missions
Recurring medical trips have logistics that one-time trips don’t. We work with families, patients, charter operators, and corporate flight departments to coordinate:
- Recurring trip scheduling — Pre-set arrival pattern, standing fuel and ground transportation arrangements
- Hotel & extended stay coordination — Preferred-rate properties in the TMC, Galleria, and downtown corridors, including extended-stay options for treatment courses
- Medical-grade ground transport — When mobility, accessibility, or comfort requires more than a standard rental car
- Catering & in-flight meals — Coordinated through approved local providers, including dietary accommodations for patients
- Pharmacy & prescription pickup — Coordination with nearby pharmacies for medications needed before departure
- Family member logistics — Hotel bookings, rental cars, and ground transport for accompanying family
