/FROM THE MANAGER
Springtime is here in Pearland and we are finally enjoying some great flying weather. With the busy flying season in full swing, I want to take a moment to address one of the most popular comments and suggestions we have received over the last few months.
Many pilots agree that the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) 122.8 is overcrowded. This frequency is used by many different operations within radio distance of KLVJ and it can cause problems. Radio transmissions are easily lost or misunderstood when a high number of aircraft across several airports are using the same frequency. This can cause dangerous situations in the pattern and on the ground.
In an effort to make flying around KLVJ safer and more convenient, we are looking into changing the CTAF for KLVJ. This is a long process with many steps, so we will need everyone to be patient as we move forward.
Once the airport has studied the available frequencies and selected a new one, we must submit forms to the FCC. The typical response time is around 60 days. If the FCC grants approval, we will notify the FAA's National Aeronautical Charting Office (NACO) to update the charts and Airport/Facility Directory. Following that, a date will be determined for a new chart (IFR and VFR) publication, the Airport will then contact the nearest Flight Service Station (FSS) to issue a NOTAM pertaining to the frequency change.
Rest assured, KLVJ staff will make every effort to ensure that pilots receive the information about the frequency change well in advance and keep you up-to-date with developments throughout the process.
We listened to your recommendations and are putting them into action. Please feel free to send any other useful suggestions to my office. We are always looking for ways to improve safety and make flying more enjoyable.
I want to personally thank everyone who has given us great feedback so far! Let's keep up the great work and remember to fly safely!
Clear skies,
